SALLY BELL'S KITCHEN . 708 West Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23220
On my drive down to South Carolina, I had the pleasure of stopping by Sally Bell's Kitchen. They've been around for 88 years and are known for their lunches, cupcakes and deviled eggs. Their darling boxed meals include a sandwich with their homemade mayo, a cup of potato or macaroni salad, one deviled egg, a cheese wafer and cupcake of your choice - for only $7.85.
With eight sandwich options to chose from, we picked out the roast beef and egg salad.
Cupcakes galore!
JESTINE'S KITCHEN . 251 Meeting St., Charleston, SC 29401In Charleston, my boyfriend was craving fried chicken! The takeout from Jestine's Kitchen was great, the meat was juicy and the skin was well seasoned. For $10.95 it came with your choice of two veggie sides, we picked red rice and collard greens. A side of the fried okra ($2.50) was worth it too however the side of fried green tomatoes ($4.95) were soggy and under-seasoned.
MELVIN'S BBQ . 925 Houston Northcutt Blvd., Mount Pleasant, SC 29464The BBQ from Melvin's was the best food experience of my trip! I was all about their Carolina Style Dry pork ribs, ($17 for half rack, $22 for a full.) They were outrageously good- smoky, juicy and had an amazing combination of spices. The meat fell off the bone! For dinner with my family, we brought back chopped BBQ Pork, coleslaw and a bottle of their Golden Secret Sauce (the recipe originally Melvin's father's.)
Melvin's has so much history, they have been around since 1939! You can check out the rest of their great story here and you can also order their famous sauces and dry rubs online here.
PEARLZ OYSTER BAR . 936 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201
After walking around the gorgeous historic district of Charleston, we worked up an appetite just in time for Pearlz's happy hour. The Corn Fritters ($1.95) were deep fried balls of goodness with chunks of corn and sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Spicy Peel & Eat Shrimp (1/2 lb. for $7.95) were tossed in Old Bay seasoning and beer boiled with cocktail sauce.
Homemade chips (.95) were hot, crunchy and seasoned with salt and pepper.
We really couldn't go wrong with getting a dozen oysters for only $7.95! Such a deal!
WEATHERVANE RESTAURANT . University Mall, 201 S. Estes Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514
I wish I could have spent more time in Chapel Hill, a picturesque college town with cute shops and restaurants. Passing through for just a meal at Weathervane proved to be a good idea as soon as this beautiful bowl of Shrimps & Grits ($14) was placed at our table. The North Carolina shrimp were plump and cooked in a tangy BBQ sauce flavored with chipotle, green beans and tasso ham. By far the best I've ever had.
